After a grueling flight with little sleep (it was actually quite pleasant... I rather like airports and flying) I arrived at Narita on time. It's amazing that as soon as I stepped off the plane everything seemed much quieter. That is one of the main differences of Japan I think.
And then came immigration, baggage claim, customs, and money exchange. They all went smoothly, except that I got stopped by the police twice! Apparently they were doing random passport checks, and carrying way too much luggage is an indication that my passport needs reviewing. Hmm.. somehow I don't think Japanese people like me as much as I was hoping they would.
By the time my train arrive at Inage station, it was already dark, so I hailed a cab to take me to the International Dorm. There I made a new friend, Sara, and we struggled to find the main office in a dorm that actually wasn't ours. By the time we got settled in, I was exhausted, but it was only 7 or so, so Sara and I made our first venture to Sati, a large department store that sells electronics, clothing, and a basement of food! I got an alarm clock, but had issues setting it. I think I am impaired in many ways, but hopefully this trip will remedy that.
My dorm room is astonishingly , but by not thinking about that too much I am adapting and it's size is growing on me. The bathroom is basically linen closet-sized, with a sink that transforms into a shower area! There is actually more space than I need for storing things. The desk has multiple shelves, there is a tall, narrow shelf and closet, and there are storage containers under the bed. Plus, I have a back patio that is connected to everyone elses! Privacy is so yesteryear.
The next-- a shower!
Today I went to the university for class orientation and received a never-ending supply of papers to supplement the infinite moving-in forms I received yesterday. The university is pretty small, but that won't stop me from getting lost! Afterwards, Sara and I went to the Inage Ward Office to file for alien registration so I can get a cell phone soon! And then we went to Maruetsu, a large and fancy equivalent to a dollar store and bought room supplies. It has been an exhausting day.
A lack of sleep is probably coloring this post with dismal shades of gray so I should try harder to appreciate life. At least the cockroaches love me--they wouldn't leave me alone last night with their incessant crawling and nibbling on me, so I hope to put an end to their terror with my roach-trap fly swatter duo. At least they are little and not kitten-sized.
They cannot withstand my roach trap and fly swatter!
Plus, I got a gift from the mothers and students association!
